The royal poinciana, also known as the flame tree, is native to Madagascar but is now found in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The plant has a strong connection to Christianity. Legend has it that the crown of thorns, placed on Jesus'' head before his crucifixion, was made from the branches of a poinciana tree.
